This collection is first of all an anthology of early Chinese drama, presenting a number of plays that in and of themselves are important as representatives of zaju as it was performed in the urban theaters of the Yuan and on the palace stage of the Ming. In each case we have based our rendition on the earliest available edition in some cases we additionally provide a translation of a later version if that version departs in important aspects from the earlier version. These plays cover the major episodes in this saga, from the famous scene of the oath in the Peach Orchard, when Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei swear brotherhood, until the moment many years and many battles later when Guan Yu and Zhang Fei have been killed and their souls travel to Chengdu to appear to Liu Bei in his dream, calling for a bloody revenge. In this collection we present the translations of seven early plays on the saga of the Three Kingdoms.
